Houng-Yung Chen

Dr. Houng-Yung Chen is a professor at the Department of Oceanography, National Sun Yat-sen University, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. He obtained his Ph. D. in Wildlife and Fisheries from Texas A&M University. He joined the faculty of NSYSU in 1983 and had served as Chairperson of Institute of Marine Biology and Dean of College of Marine Science. As a fish nutritionist, he has been working on different aspects of nutrition in penaeid shrimp, grouper and cobia, including the interactions between diet and crustacean health and between diet and fish tissue adiposity. The adiposity studies link expression of lipid metabolism-related genes (PPARs, FAS, etc.) and tissue adiposity in cobia. Most recently, his group has been investigating the roles of feeds and feeding practices in affecting tissue retention of HUFA, especially DHA, when plant protein-rich feeds were fed in marine finfish aquaculture.
